The Model United Nation

Model United Nations (MUN) - As the name suggests, is a forum which simulates the working and functioning of the UNITED NATIONS and acts as a learning platform for today's students. This model, where students are made to represent different nations, provides them with valuable insight into the skills required to succeed in the complex, dynamic and explosive world. As international diplomats, these young learners will be required to exhibit their depth of knowledge, vocal prowess, negotiating & diplomatic skills and management temperament while dealing with issues pertaining to their allotted country. In the process, they are exposed to the working environment in which government functionaries perform within the constitutional framework, policies and guidelines. A Conference of this kind provides our future generation with a chance to face challenges and issues from a global perspective. This Conference, a simulation of UN, is a unique attempt to promote the concept of interdependence and the spirit of peaceful co-existence.

During the conference, participants would be required to employ a variety of communication and critical thinking skills in order to represent the policies of their country.
Our MUN will be a simulation of the following bodies in the United Nations system:

Security Council
The General Assembly in both plenary form and within its functional committees

In MUNs, solely national organizations such as the United States National Security Council are often simulated, with delegates role-playing specific people (e.g. the Secretary of State or the Secretary of Defense) rather than representing countries. This may be taken one step further, having the delegate represent merely the interests of his/her office, or role-play a specific holder of the office (e.g. Hillary Clinton). Such committees are typically "crisis committees;" that is to say, they do not begin with a fixed topic but rather are forced to deal with issues as they come up. A team of conference organizers (known as a crisis staff) thinks up new situations and informing the committee of changing events on the ground, to which the committee must respond; in addition, individual delegates are typically allowed to take certain actions on their own, without committee approval, subject to the interpretation and agreement of the crisis staff. However, the correspondence between single-country and crisis committees are not perfect; for instance, the UN Security Council and some NATO bodies are typically run as crisis committees, and some national cabinets are fixed-topic committees.

The MUN will be run using basic parliamentary procedure. This allows all delegates to be active participants. Common activities in MUN will involve giving speeches to the committee and writing resolutions concerning a given topic. Additionally, at the end of conference, awards will be given to individual delegates.
Each delegate will be required to submit a position paper. A position paper is an essay that is written by participants. It describes the detailed position of a certain country on a topic or issue that the writer will debate in his committee. We will mandate that each delegate send his own position paper before the opening.
The position paper will include several pages outlining:
Background of the Topic
UN Involvement
Your Country's Position
Possible Solutions
Purpose
In a position paper the delegate will basically be required to explain an issue from his country's point of view.

Participation will be as individuals. Each council will have a predecided no. of members.
An unbiased chairperson will be appointed for each council which shall be some college student with experience of the official mun as orgnised by the UN. Plus from our college we will have Vice-Chair for each council.
Additionally, we have formed various departments to help us in organising namely the knowledge department, logistics department, hospitality department, press department and a misc. department. we have more than 50 members in these departments.

The chairperson apart from conducting the house will also have the duty of selecting the best delegate. The winners shall be adjudged on the basis of their oratory skills including public speaking, group communication, research, policy analysis, active listening, negotiating, conflict resolution and note taking. So the students are being given sufficient time to understand the foriegn policy of the country they are getting. In order to maintain the seriousness of the event some minimum amount of participation fees will be collected from each participant.

Model United Nations in India has become an integral part of the debating society. Students in many universities are joining the growing trend, and are adding this in their co-curricular activities. It is even gaining popularity in engineering colleges, as it helps in shaping an overall personality of the participant and gives him an experience of a real life working environment.
Thus having such a popular and important conference in our college will help the students in a lot of ways.
