The Junkyard Competition

Introduction:

"All you learners caring the books thinking what?
I wonder, that you might escape the coming fire,
your planet will suffer until its surface is nothing,
   but glass."

Welcome to the Mecca of Mechanical System Design- The Junkyard Challenge. For all the die hard engineers who believe in working out wonders from ashes, this is the right platform to unleash your talent. So, get ready to experience the thrill of  making the Pheonix fly from the ashes of junk.

General Overview:

The competition will comprise of three stages:

1. Preliminary Stage:
This will be a written test based on logical questions to test the participants aptitude and knowledge of Mechanical systems. Based on this stage a selected number of teams will be shortlisted for Fabrication stage.

2. Fabrication Stage:
The problem statement for the fabrication stage will be given on the spot.Various Mechanical equipments will be provided for achieving the problem statement. Maximum time of 3 hours will be provided, but the time taken to complete the task will be noted for each team in case team finishes earlier.

3. Testing Stage:
The fabrications of all the teams will be tested and graded.

Glimpses from the past event:

Here is the Sample problem for the teams to have general idea about the event.

Problem Statement:
Design a projectile(ball) throwing machine from the junk available that will be judged on the
basis following tests:

1. Maximum range:
The machine with maximum range(not less then 5 mtrs) will get maximum points.

2. Rate of fire:
The machine that fires maximum no. of balls in 90 sec will get highest points.

3. Bull's eye:
The machine is required to hit the given target with maximum accuracy and points will   be awarded on the basis of accuracy.

Materials Provided:
Angle plates, PVC(Polyvinyl Chloride) pipes, Iron rods, Compressible Spring.

Note:

  1. At the time of testing only 2 persons will be allowed to operate the machine.
  2. All the teams have to finish the job within 3 hours.
  3. All the teams have to submit the list of items required to the volunteers assigned to them within 30 min.

Probable Solution to the problem:

Steps Invoved:

  • Selection of frame from available material.
  • Now, for supporting the pipes use two parallel slotted bars of small height and connect a rod between the bars passing through the pipe so as to provide rotary movement of pipe about the axis of rod for variable ranges and heights.
  • For supporting the pipe at the other end, we have longer bars provide with slots in order to vary angle of cannon with horizontal.
  • Now for making the piston, select a round piece of wood with two nails provided with diametrically opposite ends.
  • For movement of the piston we provided two L shaped slots in the pipe as shown in the figure.
  • For providing the necessary force we used a compressive spring whose one end is attached to the piston and other end is connected to the rod, which is at the lower end.

Working:

  • For throwing the ball, we load the projectile from upper end(front end)  and the piston is pulled manually until the extrude ends are filled in the L-slot.
  • For shooting the ball, we slightly unlock the piston from the slot and due to compressive spring force, the ball gets the necessary kinetic energy to be thrown out upto a particular limit.

RULES:

  • Undergraduates students can take part in this competition.
  • Each team can comprise maximum of five members.

SCORING CRITERIA:

  • The scores are completely dependent upon the team’s performance in testing stage.
  • Negative points will be awarded to the teams, in case, they take extra time in fabrication  process.
  • The decision of the jury will be final.

PRIZES AND AWARDS:

  • Following are the prizes to be awarded
    • Final trophy
    • Second position

Prizes worth INR 50,000 to be won.

  • Participation certificates would be awarded to the teams which clear the preliminary test.

Good Luck to Everyone!!!
